The acting Chief Judge of Bauchi State, Justice Hamidu Kunaza, has freed 35 inmates from the Bauchi Prison to decongest the facility.
The spokesperson for the Nigerian Prisons Service, Bauchi State Command, Adam Jibrin, said this on Tuesday.
Jibrin stated that Kunaza freed the inmates after reviewing their cases during a visit to the prison.
He said, “The discharged inmates were mostly those awaiting trial and had stayed for a long period in the prison.
“The judge congratulated the discharged inmates and advised them to see their release as an opportunity for them to be reformed and avoid committing other offences that could bring them back to the prison.
‘The chief judge said his visit the prison would be periodical as long as he held the office.”
The NPS state spokesman said the Comptroller, Alhaji Sidi Muhammad, explained that the Bauchi Prison was established in 1820 with the capacity to cater for only 500 inmates.
He, however, lamented that the prison was now heavily congested with 1,041 inmates out of which 774 are awaiting trial, while 267 are convicted inmates.
