As Nigerians all over the world
celebrate Independence Day Anniversary, many in the country complain of
lack of social amenities, jobs, foods at reasonable prices, electricity
and water.
Some others have called for deep sober
reflection while many others called the bluff noting that there is
nothing really to celebrate in the country. There are some political
analysts who recall with nostalgia, how Nigerians had expected Eldorado
at Independence in 1960.
It is however a sorry story that
Nigerians are their own country’s worst enemies. A situation whereby
those who found themselves in positions of authority revel in wealth
accumulation by all means, including undertaking in shady deals just to
satisfy and safeguard their inordinate desires leaves much to be
deserved. These men and women are well-connected, well-groomed and
well-grounded. They keep on recycling themselves, whilst the nation
bleeds dry.
Sometimes, you are compelled to ask
awkward questions like, “Why did we attain independence?” This is
curious because everywhere you turn to, the stories of corruption,
nepotism and greed are there. Poverty, hunger and deprivation amidst
plenty stare one in the face. Is Nigeria’s Independence a curse or a
blessing? Our political leaders right from Independence are to be blamed
for all the national decay and moral decadence plaguing the society
today.
