Giacomo Bonaventura maturing into a leader for AC Milan

As has been the case in the last three seasons, AC Milan have experienced their fair share of highs and lows both on and off the pitch thus far in 2015-16. Arguably one of the most positive and consistent aspects of their transition though has been the form of Giacomo Bonaventura, who continues to perform at a high level regardless of the team's form.
The 26-year-old midfielder joined the Rossoneri from Atalanta last year, and in his second season with the club he is proving to be crucial to Sinisa Mihajlovic's plans. While he may not always attract the attention that he deserves, his versatility, creativity and commitment are fundamental characteristics that will be needed in order for Milan to make progress.
While the statistics tell a story in themselves, they don't always represent the true value of a player. Bonaventura has scored two and created six goals in 12 appearances so far this season, making him the most effective individual aside from Carlos Bacca.
Perhaps it isn't a coincidence that Milan's best form so far this season has come after Mihajlovic opted to move the former Atalanta star out to the left in his 4-3-3 system.
It is a formation and position that arguably suits Bonaventura perfectly, as his tireless defensive effort and sacrifice for the team is married with ensuring that he enjoys plenty of possession in the attacking third where he invariably makes a difference.
However, he has shown his ability to adapt and adjust when asked to play elsewhere, and he can be equally as effective in midfield when linking the lines and providing a threat in the No. 10 role.
Despite the coaching changes, he has continued to set a high standard. Although he may not be regarded as one of the stars of Serie A, he will certainly begin to come under consideration if he can maintain his current level of performance.

Even during the "crisis" that Mihajlovic enduring just a fortnight ago, the lack of confidence within the group didn't affect Bonaventura. The Macerata native continued to search for the ball and was never hesitant in attempting to inspire Milan to break out of their slump.
For a squad that has been criticised at great length in the past for their lack of leadership and identity, Bonaventura has been a reliable presence in the side and has firmly established himself as an important part of Mihajlovic's success at the San Siro.
When Milan have struggled, the creative midfielder has stepped up. Similarly, when the Rossoneri encounter more troubles in the coming weeks and months, he will undoubtedly be among the group capable of pushing them toward a better period of form.
His talent coupled with his ability to lead makes him a priceless individual in Milan's current situation, and the hope is that both the player himself and the team as a whole can make the next jump up in quality.
Furthermore, he only turned 26 in August and so his peak years are certainly still ahead. For all the negativity surrounding Milan's business in the transfer market, this is one of the occasions where they have undoubtedly got it right.
A place in Antonio Conte's Italy squad will become a more regular occurrence in time, and as he continues to add new attributes to his game he will be a more potent threat for club and country.
After successfully playing at a high level for so long, it is about time that Bonaventura started to receive more praise. Those within the Milan squad undoubtedly appreciate him, and he is gradually gaining more recognition for his influence.
